Chicken Feed

My youngest Sister and I were reminiscing last night about things we did as children.

She recalled our Chickens and Ducks.

We had lots of chickens, which we kept all year long. Each Easter we would receive Ducks as part of our Easter Baskets Gifts.

One of our daily tasks were to collect the eggs from the nests. This involved going into the chicken yard and entering the "coop". That was an experience in itself.
Sometimes if you were lucky you could manage to retrieve the eggs without any encounters. Other times, well........... we will just say it was NO FUN! Have you ever been flogged by an angry Mother Hen protecting her Chicks from harm?? I am here to tell you it is not pretty and it really hurts. It is an experience one is not likely to forget ( and we didn't).

Our next task in caring for the chickens required us walking to "town" to buy feed for them. Actually we would pull our red wagon to town to haul the feed home in. Can you just picture it three little girls trouping along (I might add Happily) pulling our wagon? My youngest sister rode into town like a "little Princess" with my other Sister and I taking turns pulling her in the wagon.

Her trip home was not nearly as much fun for she had to ride in the wagon holding the chicken feed As she said; "it was heavy and I got so tired holding that chicken feed".

As I think back I can only image, what we were saying or thinking about our little journey. Then you add the heat into the equation or the cool days of Fall. I think we probably loved every minute of it. As we were spending time together having some fun along the way.

Yes, I have been flogged by a mama hen and it may be the one thing keeping me from raising a flock of hens for eggs. Otherwise, I'd really like those eggs. :D

Your story about going to town is delightful. Wouldn't you like to listen in on one of those childhood conversations again?

I did most everything with my wagon in tow when I was little. It was sooo fun too! I was always bringing home hurt animals for Daddy to fix.

What great memories! I can just picture the 3 of you with your red wagon, chattering and picking up wildflowers and pretty stones along the way!

You draw a wonderful word picture about your trips to get chicken feed. Every child should have a red wagon.

Such a wonderful memory to share with us:-) I've never had any dealings with chickens but my mom loves to tell the story of when she was a little girl and it being her job to collect the eggs from the chickens in the coop. She said this one mean hen was always trying to nip at her until my gran came over and gave it a good swat with the broom! lol xoxo

what a nice thing to have your sister nearby to share childhood memories with! My sisters are in MO, New Mexico and florida. And we very rarely get to see each other. I will be seeing one of my sisters this weekend as she is flying up for my grandmothers funeral. It'll be nice to see her!
sweet dreams!
