The Bear

I was taking a trip down memory lane the other day with my Mother. As we were talking this little story came up that I would like to share with you.

When I was five years old and my sister was four we all went on vacation to The Great Smoky Mountains. When I say all I mean My parents, my Grandmother, my sister and myself, our brand new baby sister who was only 4 weeks old and our dog Butch (a sheep dog).

My sister, father and Grandmother were out of the car exploring our surroundings. My Father was snapping pictures of us. We were all so busy and excited that no one was paying any attention to our Mother, baby sister and dog who were sitting in the car.

Then all at once we heard our dog barking wildly. We stopped what we were doing and stood frozen in our spots. You see a bear had walked over to our car and was standing, looking into the window at my Mother and baby sister. My Mother was scared beyond words and was trying to duck down in the seat with her baby, This bear did not try to hurt anyone and the Park Rangers were able to distract him away from our car.
Now I want you all to know as all of this was going on my Father was busy snapping pictures.!!!! We had those pictures for years and would take them out at holidays when the family would get together. My parents house burned 13 years ago and these pictures were lost.

My Mother still gets mad when she thinks about my Dad taking pictures when a bear was peering at her. LOL What can I say this was my Dad.

Have a Great weekend!!!!

He was a journalist at heart! LOL! I am glad that you have such a good memory of this event as it helps to overcome the loss of the photos a bit. Funny story!

Wow! What a story! I am so glad that the bear didn't try to hurt anyone. It may have smelled the sweet scents from the baby?
Too bad about teh pictures being lost. I know it must have been awful to have a house fire. That is something that I have feared my entire life.
You have a blessed day!

I am so sorry that those pictures were lost, but what a blessing to have our memories of our families :-).
My son was just asking me the other day why Teddy Bears are made to look so sweet when their real life counterparts are actually quite scary!
Thanks again for your continued prayers for our family. (((hugs)))

That's almost as bad as when my boys were little and we had gone to a famous beach...here they were almost drowning and their father was too busy watching the bikini clad girls going by to even notice! lol I can well imagine how upset your mom was at the time, though, with the bear so close to her and the baby and your dad taking pictures! hehe xoxo

These stories about your dad are something else. :o) I know that was scary for you all. Maybe the dog helped scare the bear a little.

That was a great story! I can sure identify with how your Mom must have felt!! I'm sure hearing that story through out your childhood must have provided many good laughs.

Love your blog. I find that writing about family history is comforting and brings alive memories that should not be lost.

Be blessed in all you do. I know you are.

Hi Mary!
I love the bear story! That's really a good one!! Have you written down stories like that for your kids and grandkids to read through the years? Don't let them get lost, those stories are so precious.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Mary Isabella,

I am so happy to find your blog again. I lost so many of my favorite places when I got a new computer, then two weeks ago I accidently deleted my blog. I am up and running again but my old one was lost. But I am happy to find you!

Great post!

Blessings, Patty

Mary I received my package and I cannot believe you sent me granny squares from your MIL. I am thinking of putting them in a frame behind glass and hanging them in my craft room. Thank you so much for you extremly generous gift. I did not send anything nearly as precious to my recipients. I hope they don't mind handmade dishclothes. Again, thank you for the package of goodies. And thanks for hosting the PIF game!!! Marie

oh goodness , that would have terrified me too. You don't hardly ever see the bears anymore in the smokies.

Mary,

Oh, my! That is some story. I'm sure your father got some good pictures, but like your mother, I would probably have been hopping mad. LOL

So sorry the pictures were lost in the fire. Those types of memories are irreplaceable.

Blessings for a great week.

This is very funny. It's the kind of story that probably got funnier as the years passed. I have a brother like this. He would have snapped photos the entire time, too!

Thanks for sharing!
