My First Valentine

With Valentine's Day drawing near I was remembering my first Valentine's Gift from a Boy.

I was in the fourth grade. It was a big deal when I was in school to give your teacher a gift. So my parents had gotten each (4) of us children a box of candy to give to our Teachers. I was so proud of my gift. We also had made our Valentine mail boxes the night before. We used shoe boxes, construction paper, scraps of lace, ribbon and glue to create these precious boxes. Then we wrote out our cards. While we were doing this my Mom and Grandmother baked and decorated cupcakes for our parties. We were especially proud of our cupcakes this year. They were decorated with pink frosting and crushed peppermint candy. We thought them so beautiful!!

The next morning we dressed in our new red dresses our Grandmother had made for us. We were so proud of all our goodies.

Shortly after I arrived at school this boy in our class gave me the biggest box of candy I had ever seen. Twice as big as the one I gave my teacher. Plus he had bought me a special card. I was so embarrassed. My face was red all day. I tried to hide the box of candy in my desk but it was too big. The other kids found it and begin to make fun of us. They were saying the little rhymes of the day such as Mary and----- sitting in a tree kis-s-ing. Oh I just wanted to go home.

Our teacher being the wise woman she was found out about what was going on. She called me to the side and asked me if I liked ---- as a friend I answered yes. Then she said is ----- a boy? I again said yes. Then she asked if I like Chocolate Candy !!! I said yes. Thinking who doesn't like chocolate candy. Then she replied looks to me like what we have here is a boy giving his friend who just happens to be a girl a big box of candy. Then she said I could either be embarrassed or I could share the candy with my friend. You see my friend was my next door neighbor and we played together every day. What a smart woman my teacher was!!

I took the candy home my friend came over after school and we ate candy till our stomachs hurt.

Such a story........ I remember V-Day at school, when we would each have a big envelope stuck to the wall.. Each one would go around and put their V-Day card in the envelopes..... what fun that was to take them home and read each card.. I wish I had my childhood V-day cards with me today...... they would make me smile........

Thanks for shaking up that memory... I forgot all about that.......

Hi Mary!

I loved your Valentine story! I also remember making the Valentine box out of a shoe box and making out the cute little valentines to place into my classmates boxes. What a thrill that was. We'd have a Valentine's party in our classroom with treats and usually cupcakes & cookies and punch that the Mother's Club made! What wonderful memories!

Have a great weekend! Hugs,Sherry

What a lovely Valentine story. You were blessed to have such a caring teacher. Memories like this and others that you have written need to go into a memory book for your grandchildren to cherish.

What a touching story, and very cute. It is embarrassing in school, when you are young, to have a boy pay attention to you. I just love teachers that can see your predicament and help you out. I bet you looked cute in that red dress, I never received anything from my grandmother's, they had passed away before I was born.

What a nice story Mary. It's funny how certain ones are so special and vivid. Your teacher sounded like a wise woman, and what fun to have received such a big box of candy at such a little age.

That is hilarious! Man I could sure get embarrassed over anything boy related at that age!!! That would have put me under back then!
