Jack be Little

Bump, Bump, Bump, Off the truck I rolled. Bounce, thump, roll, bounce thump, roll. Down the hill I go. Rolling. rolling, rolling , gathering speed, faster and faster I rolled until I reached The bottom of the hill.

Whew am I glad that is over!! Where oh where Have I rolled to??I find myself in the middle of what appears to be a small wooded area. As I glance about me I see lots of tall trees ablaze with some of the most glorious colors. To my left is a corn field, with corn stalks reaching to the sky. Smack, dap, in the middle of the field stood a raggy man. He was attached to an old broom handle, upon his head was a straw hat and his face was painted on an old pillow case. His shirt and jeans were stuffed with straw. and on his feet were leather work boots. All about him birds of different kinds were flying,on his shoulders sat a crow, cawing loudly.

I rolled over and introduced myself. "Hello"; my name is Jack be little. I am a pumpkin. What would your name be?? I am Sam the scarecrow; he replied. "Sam' I fell off a truck filled with lots of other pumpkins. I rolled and tumbled until I came to rest in your cornfield. "I am glad to make your acquaintance" Sam told me. I was hanging here all alone wishing for some company, then along you came.

Sam I am so sad tonight is Halloween and I was going to be carved into a jack-o'latern for a child to enjoy. Now I am stuck in this field with a man made out of straw. I am so sorry Jack, but I have an idea. "You do what is it"?? If you will help me off this stick and take my hand we could go into town. To see what we can find. I think that is a grand idea.

So off they went. About a mile down the road they came upon a black cat sitting in the middle of the road. Hello there, I am Jack and this is Sam we are on our way into town. What is your name and would you like to come along with us? My name is Binks and yes I would like to come along. As we walked further down the dark, dusty road a sudden bright light appeared. We looked up to the sky and there was a full moon beaming down at us. It's light brightened our path. We continued our journey to town. At last we arrived and could not believe our eyes. Everywhere children and adults were running about. They were attired in various forms of dress.

The noise scared Binks and he arched his back, meowing and screeching. A little girl approached us. Hi, where are you all going?? We begin to tell her our story. Sounds awful, why don't you all come home with me. Sam you can stand guard over my yard. Binks you could curl up in my lap and help me hand out treats to my friends.

"What about me, asked Jack"?? I will cut your top off clean you out, saving your seeds to roast. Then I will crave a face on you, put a candle inside and set you on my porch for all to see. " Yes, yes, please do. So they all made their way home with Amanda. What a fun night they had , handing out treats to all of Amanda's friends.

( I wrote this for my daughter Amanda's children and Kiley) Have a great, fun safe, Halloween....Mary

Oh, what a wonderful story. Mary, you and I would have so much fun together if we lived nearby. We could just get totally lost in children stories together. Blessings, Karen
